DESCRIPTION:This talk facilitated by Lauren Celano of Propel Careers provides tips and advice in order to structure an effective career exploration process and ultimately a career search. We will focus on important questions to ask in order to identify “drivers” that can influence career choices. Once identified\, we will provide examples for how to leverage these drivers during a career search. We will cover a range of career paths outside of traditional academic PI and industry research roles in order to increase awareness of the numerous career paths available. We will talk about timing for these activities and how to track progress\, focus your time and lessen the feeling of being overwhelmed. Lastly\, we will provide tips for how to engage others to help you\, so that you are not alone in this process.

SUMMARY:May Madness for Middle Schools
DESCRIPTION:As the days warm and student attention wanes\, join us to learn 6 labs or activities to keep your students engaged. MassBioEd is bringing to Fitchburg some of our most popular labs and activities for middle school (or early high school) students.  We will complete 3 labs: photosynthesis using algae balls; dog coat length genetics using gel electrophoresis; and the “Taking Macromolecules to Micro!” lab from miniOne. We will also share pipetting activities\, activities to highlight DNA structure\, and enzymes.    \nThis workshop is geared specifically to middle school classes\, but high school teachers are welcome. \nParticipating teachers who submit a pre- and post- workshop assignment qualify for 10 PDPs.

Atul holds a Ph.D. from UC Irvine in Neuroscience and a post-doc from UCLA. \n\n\nSowmya Chary\, MD\, MMSc\nAssociate Medical Director\, Global Medical Safety and R&D\, Biogen\nScience\n \n\n\nSowmya is a Medical Director in Global Medical Safety at Biogen\, focusing in the Neuromuscular and Movement Disorders Therapeutic Area. A Massachusetts native\, she completed her medical training at Sri Ramachandra University in India and received her Master of Medical Sciences in Clinical Investigation from Harvard Medical School. She completed her thesis work at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital on sex-specific differences in metabolomic profiles and responses to intervention in the critically ill. Sowmya is a Fellow at the Harvard Medical School Center for Bioethics and serves on the Boston Board of Peer Health Exchange\, an organization improving health equity and outcomes for young people in under-resourced communities. She is a passionate educator and mentor and has given numerous talks on navigating career paths and roles in the biotechnology/pharmaceutical industry. SUMMARY:Explore the Genetics of Sickle Cell and the A1 and A2 beta-casein protein using gel electrophoresis
DESCRIPTION:Complete two different gel electrophoresis labs\, both exploring Medelian genetics.  In this full-day workshop\, you will use pre-prepared DNA samples to explore the alleles of the beta-globin gene responsible for sickle cell disease and trait and the alleles of the beta-casein protein that is responsible for A1 vs A2 milk. We will also explain how you can create your own genetics labs using purchased DNA fragments of dyes. \nMassachusetts teachers that complete the workshop and submit a pre- and post-workshop assignment are eligible for 10 PDPs. \nAll participants can enroll in our equipment lending program. \nLunch is provided and parking is free.
