Share the complexity of human genetics by identifying one or more single nucleotide polymorphisms in the gene for the bitter taste receptor. \nMake Mendelian genetics come alive for your students by pairing phenotypic observations with genotypic data.  Students can observe a phenotypic ratio of 3:1  (purple-stemmed plants : green stemmed plants)\, and through PCR identify homozygotes and heterozygotes in the purple-stemmed plants. \nAttendees can take home the reagents needed to complete one of these labs with up to 40 students. \n  \nMassachusetts teachers that complete the workshop and submit a pre- and post-workshop assignment are eligible for 10 PDPs. \nAll participants can enroll in our equipment lending program.

Come spend a day with your colleagues from across the state at a fun and dynamic workshop. You’ll enjoy working with teacher and student-friendly MiniOne equipment to explore multiple facets of biology and learn about new labs and approaches to teaching important biological concepts. \nIn this FREE workshop\, teachers will… \n\n\nPerform PCR and compare ELISA antibody results to determine who has the flu and who may have natural immunity from previous exposure of vaccination. \n\n\nCollect data and design an experiment to determine which food at a party caused a food poisoning outbreak. \n\n\nChoose your own adventure-Pick one of three labs to do to illustrate how molecular biology can be used to connect real world phenomenon in forensic\, health and agricultural science. \n\n\nSolve a murder mystery OR \n\n\nDetermine the genotypes of a family with a history of sickle cell disease OR \n\n\nHelp a farmer choose the best cows and bull to increase the value of his/her milk for cheese production. \n\n\n\n\nExamine results from an enhanced GFP transformation lab. \n\n\nBe eligible to earn 10 PDP by attending entire workshop and completion of pre and post assignments (issued by MassBioEd). \n\n\nLearn about Fitchburg University’s lending program for MiniOne electrophoresis equipment. \n\n\nAlthough the activities that include PCR are intended for high school level classes\, the other labs can be readily adapted for\nmiddle school students! \nMiniOne Systems is providing all materials and lunch free of charge.
