SUMMARY:Explore genetics through gel electrophoresis
DESCRIPTION:Complete two different gel electrophoresis labs\, both exploring Mendelian genetics.  In this 2 hour workshop\, you will use pre-prepared DNA samples to explore the alleles of the beta-globin gene responsible for sickle cell disease and trait and the alleles of the gene responsible for coat length in dogs. We will also explain how you can create your own genetics labs using purchased DNA fragments or dyes. These labs are appropriate for grades 7 – 12. \nAll participants can enroll in our equipment lending program. Attendees can take home dye samples to implement the lab for up to 50 students.

SUMMARY:Explore the genetics of sickle cell and coat length in dogs using gel electrophoresis
DESCRIPTION:Complete two different gel electrophoresis labs\, both exploring Medelian genetics.  In this full-day workshop\, you will use pre-prepared DNA samples to explore the alleles of the beta-globin gene responsible for sickle cell disease and trait and the alleles of the gene responsible for coat length in dogs. We will also explain how you can create your own genetics labs using purchased DNA fragments or dyes. These labs are appropriate for grades 7 – 12. \nMassachusetts teachers that complete the workshop and submit a pre- and post-workshop assignment are eligible for 10 PDPs. \nAll participants can enroll in our equipment lending program. \nLunch is provided and parking is free.
