What is Career Coaching?

Career coaching is a professional service designed to help you navigate your career journey with expert guidance. Whether you are trying to break into a new field or searching for your next job, career coaching can help you clarify your goals, explore career paths, build job-search skills, and discover education and training opportunities to move confidently toward meaningful, sustainable work. 

Our free Career Coaching Program combines self-paced online courses with one-on-one sessions led by experienced volunteer coaches. 


What Will Career Coaching Look Like?

While each person’s coaching experience is unique, here’s a general overview of the coaching process:

On-Line Courses
All participants can take self-paced courses to build job-search skills. Topics include: 

  • Developing Your Resume – Unlock the secrets to creating a resume that stands out.
  • Developing Your Cover Letter – Tell your story and show employers who you are. This course will cover how to write an effective cover letter.
  • Informational Interviewing – Join our course to learn about informational interviewing and how to use this tool in your career search.
  • Recognizing Transferable Skills – Think you are not a good fit for the job? You might have what it takes. Discover your transferable skills.
  • Career Compass: Find your Path to Success – Feeling lost in your career journey? Let us guide you. Discover your true calling, overcome indecision, and take confident steps towards a fulfilling career.

One-on-One Coaching
After completing at least two courses, eligible participants may be matched with a volunteer career coach for up to three sessions over a three-month period. 

What to Expect 

  • Complete an intake form so we can learn about you and your career interests. 
  • Receive links to our series of online courses.
  • If you are interested and eligible for coaching, complete at least two courses before we match you with a coach.
  • Meet with your coach up to three times. Coaching sessions must be completed within 3 months of being matched. You will meet with your coach on a schedule and platform you both choose.
  • Complete short surveys about your progress to help us improve the program. 

*Note on Confidentiality: Your personal information and coaching sessions will remain confidential and will be used only for program reporting and improvement. 


Eligibility for Coaching: This free program offers support for Massachusetts residents who want to launch or advance their careers in the life sciences industry. 

  • Participants who already hold a master’s or PhD degree in the life sciences or substantial experience in the life sciences industry are only eligible to receive access to the online courses. 
  • All other participants, including those with advanced degrees in other fields, are eligible for both online courses and coaching.


Volunteer as a Career Coach

We are looking for coaches with a good understanding of the life sciences industry. Participating coaches will work with clients from diverse academic, economic, cultural, and language backgrounds.
