Description

Executive Presence for Scientists provides scientific leaders with critical competencies to communicate their ideas with clarity, confidence, and strategic impact.  Specifically, the course will focus on enhancing speaker’s use of presence, voice, visuals, and non-verbal techniques to strengthen their message and build their credibility and influence with both technical and non-technical audiences.   It will also refine speaker’s capabilities in navigating questions, disagreements, and challenging conversations. 

The goal is not to turn scientists into executives. Rather, it is to help scientists translate their expertise into influence — so that their research and ideas are heard, their judgment is trusted, and they are recognized as leaders who not only have critical insights into their area science but also into the potential business impact of their recommendations.

Who should attend?

This course is ideal for:

• Scientists who are interested in enabling more engagement, persuasion, and business impact from their presentations
• Scientists that would like to feel more confident, calm, and energized when presenting
• Scientists who are expected to influence decisions, lead people, communicate beyond their technical specialty, or represent their organization
• Scientists transitioning from academia to industry — especially those learning to operate in a more business-oriented and matrixed environment
• Scientists who represent the organization externally — speakers, conference presenters, scientific liaisons, or subject-matter experts interacting with customers, partners, investors, regulators, or media

Participants interested in continuing to build their leadership capabilities may benefit from Transitioning to Leader: Extended Version, which supports professionals as they develop the skills and mindset needed to lead others effectively, or Preparing for Effective Presentations, which provides additional practice in communicating ideas clearly and confidently to a range of audiences. Intro to Biotech: Business is also a strong complement for scientists looking to deepen their understanding of the business context in which scientific decisions and recommendations are made.

Meet the Instructor

Rick Lyman
Founder & President, Executive Consulting and Coaching

Rick is a leadership consultant and executive coach with over 35 years of experience supporting leaders and organizations across a wide range of industries, including biotechnology, healthcare, technology, financial services, and manufacturing. He has held senior leadership roles at global organizations such as Boston Scientific, Cisco Systems, Fidelity Investments, and Bank of America, and currently works as an executive coach with Harvard Business School’s Executive Education programs. Rick holds a BA and MA from Brown University and an MBA from Babson College.
